Ban đầu, khác với tình hình trong Sài Gòn, nơi các blogger bị đàn áp trắng trợn ngay tại nhà, ở Hà Nội, buổi gặp diễn ra không có bạo lực. Mặc dù thành viên Mạng Lưới vẫn bị theo sát - có lẽ do lực lượng an ninh ý thức rất rõ rằng hôm nay là Ngày Quốc tế Nhân quyền - nhưng không ai bị chặn cửa, đánh đập rồi bị khóa nhốt trong nhà như ở Sài Gòn. Tuy nhiên, banner chào mừng Ngày Quốc tế Nhân quyền của Mạng Lưới Blogger Việt Nam bị lực lượng an ninh thu giữ không lý do. Trước đó vài ngày, những chiếc áo phông viền xanh lá cây với logo của Mạng Lưới cũng bị an ninh "cướp" mất - theo nghĩa là tịch thu không giải thích.
Đúng giờ, khoảng hai chục blogger có mặt tại cafe Thủy Tạ ven hồ Hoàn Kiếm.

Buổi ra mắt Mạng Lưới có sự tham dự của TS. Nguyễn Quang A - một trong các sáng lập viên của Diễn đàn Xã hội Dân sự, và một vị khách đặc biệt, cũng là blogger: “Ông Tây thuốc lào” Jonathan London.

Jonathan London, sinh năm 1969, quốc tịch Mỹ, là một gương mặt blogger viết tiếng Việt mới nổi lên từ tháng 4 năm nay, với những bài phân tích chính trị và chính trường Việt Nam hết sức sâu sắc, trí tuệ và cả hài hước. Nổi bật hơn tất cả là, qua các bài viết của Jonathan, bạn đọc thấy tấm lòng đối với Việt Nam, của một người nước ngoài thực sự không có mong muốn nào khác ngoài việc được thấy một nước Việt Nam tự do, dân chủ, nơi các giá trị nhân quyền được tôn trọng và người dân hạnh phúc.
Vài giờ trước khi bay sang Việt Nam hôm nay, Jonathan London đã viết riêng một bài cho Mạng Lưới nhân ngày ra mắt, trong đó anh nhấn mạnh: "Rõ ràng, nhân quyền cần thiết cho hạnh phúc của tất cả người dân Việt Nam. Quan điểm của tôi là nếu không có những tiến bộ lớn về nhân quyền, Việt Nam chỉ có thể thay đổi rất ít trong việc giải quyết các thách thức cấp bách nhất mà họ phải đối mặt ngày nay. Với chiếc ghế thành viên Hội đồng Nhân quyền Liên Hợp Quốc mới giành được, trách nhiệm của chính quyền Việt Nam trong việc tôn trọng và thúc đẩy nhân quyền là rõ ràng hơn bao giờ hết".

Không muốn đôi co, nhất là khi điện đã bị cắt, mọi người ra về. Công an mặc thường phục, sắc phục, còn đi theo từng người một quãng xa để tiếp tục quay phim, chụp ảnh. Jonathan London lắc đầu, nói với họ: "Hiến pháp Việt Nam đảm bảo các quyền tự do, nhưng chỉ là trên giấy thôi". Song có lẽ không công an, dân phòng nào hiểu điều anh nói.
